UNSC: Portugal Backs India’s Permanent Membership Bid at United Nations

 

India’s long-standing demand for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has received another major boost on the global stage. Portugal has openly supported India’s candidature for permanent membership in the UNSC, saying that influential countries like India and Brazil can no longer be ignored in global decision-making.

Speaking during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Portugal’s President emphasized the need to reform international institutions so that they better reflect the realities of the modern world. He stated that countries such as India and Brazil deserve permanent representation in the Security Council due to their growing importance in global politics and economics.

Portugal’s support is being viewed as an important diplomatic win for India, which has been campaigning for years to secure a permanent position in the UNSC. The President said that global institutions must evolve with changing times and include nations that play a major role in maintaining global stability, economic growth, and international cooperation.

India has consistently argued that the current structure of the Security Council no longer represents today’s geopolitical realities. As the world’s largest democracy and one of the fastest-growing major economies, India believes it deserves a stronger voice in global governance. India has also contributed significantly to United Nations peacekeeping missions and international humanitarian efforts over the decades.

During his address, the Portuguese President also highlighted the need for reforms in global financial institutions. He criticized the existing system for failing to provide equal and fair support for sustainable development. According to him, wealthy nations often receive greater priority while poorer and developing countries continue to struggle for adequate financial assistance.

He called for a more balanced and just financial framework that can effectively support sustainable development goals and help countries deal with global challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and energy crises. Portugal, he said, remains committed to the principles of the United Nations Charter and believes in strengthening international cooperation.

The Portuguese leader also stressed the importance of fighting climate change and promoting green energy. He said Portugal is actively working toward decarbonization and encouraging cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. Environmental protection, according to him, should remain a top priority for the global community.

India has also been vocal about the need to reform global institutions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly raised the issue on international platforms, arguing that 21st-century challenges cannot be addressed effectively with institutions designed decades ago. India believes that without reforms in the United Nations and other global organizations, meaningful global representation and balance cannot be achieved.

Over the years, several major countries have expressed support for India’s permanent membership in the UNSC. Nations including the United States, France, Russia, and the United Kingdom have backed India’s candidature at different points. Portugal’s endorsement further strengthens India’s diplomatic position and adds momentum to the ongoing conversation around UNSC reform.
